Ayoub El Kaabi's Spectacular Strike Secures The Atlas Lions' Victory Over Comoros in Africa Cup of Nations First Game.
Host nation Morocco shook off a nervy start to defeat Comoros in the tournament's opening game on the weekend, after strikes by Brahim Díaz and super-sub El Kaabi in the second half.
It was a hardly emphatic performance, however, from the strongly favored Moroccans, who sit 97 places above the tiny Indian Ocean nation in the world rankings and had to work tirelessly for the three points in rainy conditions at Rabat's national stadium.
Nervy Beginning and Spurned Opportunities
The hosts missed an early spot-kick and were goalless at half-time despite controlling possession, eventually breaking the deadlock in the 55th minute.
It arrived after full-back Mazraoui did well to prevent the ball from going out before slipping it square for Brahim Díaz to calmly pass home.
“The opening game is always difficult but we came good in the second half,” commented manager Regragui.
El Kaabi's Piece of Magic
Any lingering nerves was then eased by a piece of pure individual brilliance from Ayoub El Kaabi. Just 10 minutes following his introduction, the striker connected with a ball into the box with a stunning overhead kick in the 74th minute, making it two and sealing the win.
Earlier in the match, the Moroccan team could have been ahead in the 11th minute after a spot-kick was awarded for a foul on Brahim Díaz. Yet, Rahimi's penalty was kept out by keeper Pandor.
Comoros Resistance and Second-Half Opportunity
Comoros stoutly defended against Morocco at bay until the Moroccans' superior firepower eventually told.
Shot-stopper Yannick Pandor pulled off several further fine saves to limit the scoreline as the game progressed, although his team created a clear opportunity for an equaliser shortly following the first goal, with Saïd shooting straight at keeper Bounou.
Injury Concern for Hosts
The three points was somewhat overshadowed by an injury to Morocco's captain, Romain Saïss, who was forced off in the 18th minute in tears.
The defender had only returned to the international setup recently following a lengthy layoff caused by a serious ankle operation.
The win continues Morocco's historic run of consecutive wins to 19, surpassing the old record of 15 set by Spain between 2008 and 2009.
