Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board

Corporate Departure
The economist stated he would step back from public positions after House committee released his frequent communications with Epstein

One-time economic leader Larry Summers is leaving the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a series of emails between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became publicly available.

Summers commented in a statement that he was "thankful for the privilege to have served, excited about the potential of the enterprise, and eagerly await following their advancement".

Summers, who once presided over the prestigious university, stated on earlier this week that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

Email Communications

The recently released communications demonstrated that the official corresponded with the financier until the 24 hours preceding the financier's 2019 detention for suspected sex trafficking of minors.

In a separate statement, the technology organization said it understood his determination to step down.

"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he provided to the directors," OpenAI stated.

Congressional Action

This news follows after the entire Congress of the legislative branch voted on recently to pass a measure that would compel the US justice department to make public its records on Epstein.

The legislation will then proceed to the administration of the White House for signature. The President has stated he plans to sign the measure, after modifying his view on the issue following objections from his base.

Email Contents

A collection of Epstein-connected correspondence released by the legislative panel days ago referenced numerous well-known personalities in the Epstein's past associates, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those people.

The communications showed that the economist and the financier regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often seeking to link the academic to influential world leaders.

Personal Accountability

After the messages were released with the general audience, Summers said he took "full responsibility for my misguided decision to persist in corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".

He added that he desired "to restore confidence and mend connections with the individuals nearest to me".

Previous Positions

The economist served in high-level positions under party leaders; serving as treasury secretary under the former president, and as director of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.

He presided over the institution from 2001 to 2006 and is still a professor there. When declaring his step-down from public duties earlier on Monday, he said he would maintain his academic responsibilities.

Other Impacts

Following the economist's announcement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a liberal research organization in the capital where he was a prominent member, confirmed that Summers was ceased to be connected with the group.

The former official became part of the directorate of OpenAI, which makes the language model, in last year - following a defeated move to remove its top executive Sam Altman.
