Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's Chief Executive Steps Down After Pivot Towards Chicken.
A boss of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who indicated the UK might have hit peak pizza while broadening the company into chicken products has been ousted after tensions with its directors.
Executive Shake-Up
The former CEO is exiting after a brief tenure in the top role, and will be replaced on an interim basis by the organization's chief operating officer, Frampton, while Domino's searches for a permanent CEO.
The outgoing executive, who was with the company for a substantial period, had attempted to shift Britain's leading pizza food delivery firm towards fried chicken, stating in a recent interview there was not “huge potential” left in the pizza sector in the UK. He noted chicken was the quickest rising protein in the international market.
Board Tensions
Reports indicate that there was tension between Rennie and the board over his approach and business vision, although Domino's release said he was leaving “by mutual agreement”.
Recent Brand Introduction
In September, Domino's launched its poultry product line – which the former chief called a “bold new chapter” for the organization – and is trialling it in 210 outlets in the North West region and the province.
While the business is still going to roll it out across its extensive network in 2026 as intended, it considers fried chicken as complementary to its main pizza offerings.
Board Statement
Bull, the Domino's chairman, said: “We are confident that there are a number of opportunities to enhance value and performance improvement in our primary operations. We are concentrating on finding the right chief executive to oversee the disciplined execution of that development approach.”
Market Challenges
Earlier this month, Domino's, which has 13 million customers in the UK and Ireland, said orders dipped by 1.5 percent in the latest quarter. In August, it cautioned that the takeaway market had “intensified” as it attributed economic uncertainty in the run-up to the budget and higher payroll outlays for disappointing revenue and a significant fall in six-month income.
Competitors are also struggling. Another major chain disclosed the closing of multiple locations a last month, after the firm behind its outlets fell into administration.
Wellness Initiatives
Responding to market shifts towards balanced diets, the company has introduced light products, such as its thin-crust selection of pizzas below 400 kcals as well as vegan and allergy-friendly options. A big pepperoni bake has 2,311 calories. A big margherita has over 2,100, while a individual has 909 kcal.
Acting Management
Nicola Frampton has been with the company since the recent past, and previously worked for the gaming group William Hill. It is understood that she does not want to take on the CEO position long-term.
She said: “Our team has a multiple current growth and performance initiatives that we will be focused on carrying out at speed.”
Frampton noted these involved additional efforts on the organization's procurement system and menu innovation, and its customer retention initiative.
Domino's is also lacking a full-time finance director until the spring, when a new appointee joins from the drinks company a well-known firm. For now, Snow serves as acting financial officer.
