The network's Top New Show of 2025 Secures a Significant Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel launched a completely new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. In an era often marked by cynicism, this show's sincerity found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
Network Praise
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who found the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about observing this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to evolve comedy past its current layer of irony. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially be part of that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to experience the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
