The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Complete Trust' in Teenager Pitarch
When an 18-year-old makes club a historic moment in a crucial Champions League match against City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.
In only his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions secured a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to confirm a last eight berth.
Aged 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vini Jr's record by 10 days.
A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy
This talent is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.
He signed for Real from Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who took over from Xabi Alonso in the new year.
Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," adding he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, personality and drive he added to the side.
'His Best Attribute Is His Personality'
In the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to train with the senior squad and awarded him playing time during the warm-up matches.
However, it was the change in manager that became the turning point in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing the game, each day you head to training and each day you have a game," stated Pitarch following his first appearance.
"I've just achieved my dream with the best team in the world and in the best competition."
Given a starting debut in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.
The teenager has taken it with performances that have defied his age and experience.
"He's a extremely fast player, and you can see what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He's extremely energetic, with great stamina, effort and movement."
The player's mindset has also impressed his manager.
"His standout trait is his character," continued he. "He constantly demands the ball, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.
"I understand fans might be astonished to see him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to do his normal game.
"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through local academies before joining the club's famous La Fabrica system.
He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish nationality, giving him the option to play for both nations at senior international level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a official senior international match.
He has featured for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the U19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.
Despite this, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are watching his progress with interest.
Speaking recently, the player said: "I have not taken my final decision so far. My situation is positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."
This scenario echoes that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas teenage Lamine chose Spain, Brahim opted to play for the Atlas Lions.
Focus on the Future
At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.
He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one victory at City, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.
His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to aid the team pursue trophies to come.
After his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I have to earn my playing time on the pitch," he said following the success at Etihad Stadium.
