The Red Devils Set to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side
The forward, with half a year left on her deal, is known as a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing will be seen as a major signing for the WSL side.
Her exit from Munich was expected after she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top forwards. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Reliable Goalscoring to Boost United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a significant uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when United appear to be building momentum.
Their recent performances include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has seen further business:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure commented: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the American league, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
